Intuit's QuickBooks is an comprehensive accounting software used primarily for accounting and bookkeeping in many industries. Both a desktop and online version exists of these programs. However, it seems as though they are looking to transition into a cloud-based service, a trend among software providers and businesses alike. So, is QuickBooks changing to online-only?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: 2020 versions of some QuickBooks version's have reached end-of-life and will need to be transitioned into a newer version or migrate to an online version.

On May 31st, 2023, Intuit stopped supporting these QuickBooks versions:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020

  • QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2020 (General Business, Contractor, Manufacturing & Wholesale, Nonprofit, Professional Services, and Retail)

  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 20

  • QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2020

  • QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant 20

  • QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2020

On October 3rd, 2023, Intuit will also stop supporting:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale 19.0

What does this mean?: Per QuickBooks website, quote: "...by May 31, 2023, you won't have access to live technical support if you run into problems." If you do not have one of these versions, your desktop version of QuickBooks is not affected. However, in the future, you may need to transition to an online version, if Intuit decides to transition into an online-only subscription model. Many companies, like Adobe, have moved to this model.

What should I do if I have one of these outdated versions?: Inuit has information on how to move from Desktop to Online here: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online (intuit.com)
